How to travel confidently, stay flexible, and actually enjoy family trips with littles

Before I became a mom, travel looked very different.
It looked like:
Last-minute packing
Carry-on bags only
Airport coffee and spontaneous plans
Now?
Travel looks like:
Diapers
Snacks
Backup outfits
Nap schedules
A stroller loaded with half your house
And honestly?
Sometimes it feels like preparing for a small expedition.
If you’re traveling this summer with little ones—especially two toddlers close in age like my 15-month-old and 2.5-year-old—I want you to know something:
Traveling with kids isn’t harder.
It’s just different.
And once you stop trying to travel like you did before kids, everything changes.
This is everything I’ve learned about traveling with two little ones—from flights and road trips to hotels, Disney trips, cruises, and weekend family adventures.
First: Change Your Expectations
This is the biggest mindset shift.
Traveling with toddlers is not about:
Seeing everything
Doing everything
Keeping a perfect schedule
It’s about:
Creating memories
Staying flexible
Protecting your peace
Because if your expectations stay rooted in pre-kid travel…
You’ll probably feel frustrated.
But if your goal becomes:
👉 “We’re here to experience this together.”
Travel becomes so much more enjoyable.
Rule #1: Travel Early If You Can
This has been one of the biggest game changers for us.
Toddlers usually do best:
✔ Earlier in the day
✔ Before they’re overtired
✔ Before overstimulation hits
If possible, choose:
Flights:
Morning departures
Road Trips:
Leave right after breakfast OR during nap window
Why it works:
Your kids are:
Better rested
Happier
More predictable
And honestly? So are you.
Rule #2: Pack by Category, Not by Person
This saves so much stress.
Instead of packing:“My son’s bag”“My daughter’s bag”
Pack by need category:
Diapering Bag
Pack:
Diapers
Wipes
Cream
Changing pad
Extra outfits
Snack Bag
Pack:
Pouches
Crackers
Protein snacks
Water bottles
Entertainment Bag
Pack:
Books
Coloring
Sticker books
Small sensory toys
Flights: What Actually Works
Let’s be real.
Flying with toddlers can feel intimidating.
But preparation changes everything.
What We Always Bring
For your 2.5-year-old:
Sticker books
Coloring tablet
Snacks (lots)
Favorite comfort item
For your 15-month-old:
Sensory toys
Pouches
Teething snacks
Soft books
For both:
Extra outfits
Diapers
Wipes
Lightweight blanket
Biggest Flight Tip:
Do not hand them everything at once.
Rotate activities every:
20–30 minutes
This stretches entertainment much longer.
Road Trips: Survival Tips
Road trips can actually be easier.
But timing matters.
My Favorite Strategy:
Drive during:
First nap
OR
Right after breakfast
Stop every:
2–3 hours
Even a quick park stop helps reset everyone.
Car Essentials:
ShopMy Collection:
“Toddler Travel Essentials”
Link:
Car organizers
Portable fans
Spill-proof snack cups
Tablet holders
Travel blankets
Hotels: How to Make It Easier
Hotels can be amazing… or a disaster.
Here’s what helps:
Book rooms with:
✔ Separate sleep spaces if possible
✔ Mini fridge
✔ Microwave or kitchenette
Bring:
Sound machine
Blackout covers
Favorite sleep items
Biggest hotel tip:
Recreate bedtime as closely as possible.
Same:
Pajamas
Books
Sound machine
Sleep phrase
Toddlers thrive on predictability.
Eating While Traveling
Here’s your permission slip:
You do not need perfect meals while traveling.
Focus on:
Protein + familiarity
Examples:
Fruit
Yogurt
Eggs
Crackers
Sandwiches
Keep everyone fed = fewer meltdowns.
Protect Nap Time (When You Can)
This doesn’t mean your trip revolves around naps.
But if possible:
Build your day around:
Morning adventure
Midday rest
Evening outing
This is exactly how we do Disney, travel, and summer trips.
And it changes everything.
The Things I Don’t Stress About Anymore
This matters.
I no longer stress about:
Matching outfits every day
Seeing every attraction
Perfect nap timing
Screen time during travel
Because travel isn’t everyday life.
It’s okay to bend a little.
The Real Secret to Traveling with Littles
It’s not packing better.
It’s not the perfect stroller.
It’s not the itinerary.
It’s this:
Your energy sets the tone.
If you stay flexible…
Your kids usually follow.
