The Cutest Coordinating Family Outfits for Your Summer Vacation Photos

Mix-and-match colour palettes and pieces the whole family will actually want to wear — because the best family photos happen when everyone feels comfortable and confident.

Family photos are one of those things that sound simple in theory and become a full project in practice. What do we all wear? How do we coordinate without looking like we planned it too hard? What actually photographs well? After more than a few attempts (and one very memorable colour clash), I've cracked the family outfit formula — and I'm sharing everything.

The Golden Rule: Coordinate, Don't Match

The most elevated family photos are never the ones where everyone is wearing the exact same colour or pattern. They're the ones where everyone looks like they belong together without looking like a uniform. The goal is cohesion — a shared colour palette, a shared vibe — not identical outfits. Think of it like a mood board: if you pulled all the outfits out and laid them side by side, do they feel like they're from the same world? That's the test.

Palette 01 · Warm Neutrals — The Timeless Classic

Cream, ivory, warm white, camel, tan, and sand. This palette photographs beautifully in almost every setting — beach, park, city, resort — and never dates. It's the easiest palette to shop because neutrals are always available, and it produces the warmest, most timeless family photos. For summer, look for linen, cotton, and gauze fabrics in these tones — they photograph with beautiful texture and keep everyone cool. Mom: a linen midi dress or wide-leg linen trousers with a fitted cream tank Dad: tan or khaki linen shorts with a white or ivory linen shirt Toddler/Baby: a cream linen romper or smock dress, a neutral onesie with a matching hat

Palette 02 · Blue & White — The Resort Classic

Blue and white is one of the most photographed family palettes for good reason — it looks incredible near water, pops beautifully in natural light, and feels fresh and summery without trying too hard. Use navy, cobalt, sky blue, and white in varying shades and textures across the family, and the result feels intentional and elevated. Mom: a white sundress or a blue striped midi Dad: navy shorts or chinos with a white linen shirt Toddler: a navy smocked dress or a blue-and-white striped romper Baby: a white bubble romper with a blue bow or detail

"The best family photos aren't the perfectly posed ones — they're the ones where everyone actually felt comfortable and happy in what they were wearing."

Palette 03 · Terracotta & Sage — The Boho Summer

For a more earthy, bohemian summer look, terracotta, rust, sage green, and warm olive are having a major moment right now — and they photograph with stunning warmth, especially in golden hour light. This palette works beautifully for park sessions, orchard backdrops, and wooded or natural settings. Mom: a terracotta wrap dress or rust-toned linen set Dad: olive or tan chinos with a rust or burnt orange shirt Toddler: a sage green smocked dress or terracotta romper Baby: a rust or cream onesie with matching headband

Tips for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session

Book the session at golden hour — one hour before sunset is the most flattering light of the day

• Make sure everyone has napped and eaten beforehand (this is non-negotiable with toddlers)

• Bring one comfort item or favorite small toy for any little ones who might need settling

• Avoid dry-clean-only fabrics — you'll be nervous the whole session

• Let toddlers move and play — the candid shots are always the best ones

• Bring a change of clothes for the kids — spills happen at the worst moments

• Relax about perfection — a genuine laugh is worth ten posed smiles

Family photos are about so much more than the clothes. But the clothes matter because when everyone feels comfortable, confident, and beautiful together, it shows — in the smiles, in the body language, in the way you look back at those photos ten years from now. Choose a palette that feels like your family. Keep it simple. And let the joy do the rest of the work.
