There's something so exciting about getting a head start on Christmas shopping, especially when you have little ones. I love finding gifts that will bring genuine excitement on Christmas morning but will also be enjoyed long after the decorations come down.

October Prime Day is the perfect opportunity to start checking gifts off your list without waiting until the holiday rush.

This year, I'm focusing on gifts that encourage creativity, imagination, movement and independent play. These are my favorite categories to shop for toddlers and younger children.

10 Christmas gift ideas worth shopping early

An excellent screen-free gift for little ones who love music, stories and their favorite characters.

Disney character Tonies are especially fun for building a collection over time.

Best for: Ages 3 and up, following the manufacturer's guidance.

A timeless Christmas gift that encourages imaginative play.

Add wooden food, miniature pots and pans, or a pretend coffee machine for an extra-special Christmas morning surprise.

One of my favorite categories of toys because children can enjoy them in so many different ways.

Build towers, houses, garages and colorful creations. Look for age-appropriate sets with secure, enclosed magnets.

From Rapunzel to Cinderella, Disney dolls are wonderful gifts for little princess fans.

Look for age-appropriate dolls, dress-up accessories and character playsets.

For little ones who love being outside, a balance bike makes an exciting larger Christmas gift.

Choose the correct size, and don't forget a properly fitted helmet.

DUPLO sets are a wonderful introduction to building.

Look for animal, vehicle and Disney-themed collections that match your child's interests.

For your little artist, an easel paired with washable art supplies is a thoughtful gift.

Add a personalized art smock and a basket for supplies to make it feel extra special.

From classic toy cars to indoor ride-on toys, these are wonderful options for active toddlers.

Check the manufacturer's age and weight recommendations.

A baby doll with a stroller, crib or feeding accessories can provide hours of imaginative play.

These also make wonderful gifts for little ones who enjoy caring for their favorite toys.

A Christmas book basket is one of my favorite gift ideas.

Include a few beautiful picture books, cozy pajamas and a soft blanket for a gift that encourages family time.

Don't forget the stocking stuffers

While shopping for the larger gifts, I always recommend checking prices on the little things that can add up quickly.

Crayons, coloring books, bath toys, character toothbrushes, hair bows, small toy vehicles and fun water bottles are all wonderful stocking stuffer ideas.

For babies and younger toddlers, avoid small parts and select items appropriate for their age.

Why I start Christmas shopping in October

Starting early gives me more time to enjoy the holiday season instead of spending December rushing around trying to find everything.

I like to purchase the larger gifts first, then gradually fill in the smaller items. It also gives me time to plan Christmas pajamas, advent calendars and our favorite holiday traditions.

My biggest recommendation? Shop with a list, especially when the sales start getting exciting!
